“Frame” for #septtextilelove by @seam_collective

I don’t often frame as I prefer a more organic look for something as tactile as textiles. But for smaller works sometimes a frame is the perfect finish.

This is one of my most recent pieces, antique linen and cotton dyed with pigment with applied gold leaf.

I love participating in short courses to learn new skills. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from great artists imparting wisdom and knowledge. Sewing particularly by hand is a meditative pleasure though I never sit in silence. Rarely do I listen to music due to years of being subjected to the radio while making costumes. This is my time to catch up on Netflix and YouTube!

This piece had been waiting for 4 years.. it’s mainly because it’s quite large at least 1.5m square. Made from a vintage Furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloth) with gold leaf.

I stopped to make other smaller pieces to sell on Etsy and there it still is, on pause! One day…

Question is what do I do next with this? I have a lot of beautiful shabby textiles waiting to be repurposed into something new. This cloth is a faded and worn vintage Indian textile that I’ve removed most of the stitching from in the 2nd photo. Added an old shisha mirror decoration and then…. It’s simpler to restrict yourself to a few stitches than try everything that exists. It lends itself to coherence over a body of work and I’m sticking to that explanation!
Hand stitching is more tactical and therapeutic and is best enjoyed slowly.

Antique and vintage textiles are all I use for my artworks because they’re easily sourced and far far more interesting to work with! As someone from a costume background, there is a lot of waste materials that can reused and recycled with a bit of imagination. I dye, print or paint or use their natural faded and worn state to create something new.
The oldest fabric I’ve used is from the 17th century and yes, I have a considerable fabric stash…
